Columbus beats Pensacola 3-1 after comeback scare

The Columbus Cottonmouths survived a determined comeback attempt by the Pensacola Ice Flyers on the way to a 3-1 win.
Columbus took a 3-0 lead during the third period, only to have Pensacola storm back on a Justin MacDonald goal 19:50 into the third period to pull to two goals down.
The Ice Flyers' power play was ineffective against the Cottonmouths' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.
Columbus' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Pensacola power plays. The Cottonmouths put 23 shots on net during the contest, more than the 19.2 they average per game. Columbus could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.
The Cottonmouths were helped by Tom Fitzpatrick, who grabbed one goal. Fitzpatrick scored 14:38 into the third period to make the score 2-0 Columbus. Sam Bowles provided the assist. John Sullivan also scored for Columbus. More assists for Columbus came via Matt Gingera, who had one.
Pensacola was often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Flyers had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game.
Andrew Loewen made 20 saves for Columbus on 21 shots. The Cottonmouths registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Gerry Festa rejected 20 shots on goal for Pensacola. The Ice Flyers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ryan Salvis was ejected from the game.
