Thompson joined the Capitales in 2010, after spending the previous 2 years with Wichita. Thompson played for both Wichita and the Capitales in 2010. Even though he missed the first half of the season, the California native still managed to hit 17 doubles with the Capitales, tied for first place on the team.
After graduating from Santa Clara University, Thompson got drafted by the Houston Astros, in the 26th round of the 2005 MLB draft. He spent the first 3 years of his professional career playing level A baseball with the Astros affiliate teams, and then got released and signed a contract with the Kansas City Royals.
