Hallberg is in his second year as an infielder out of Ohio State University after taking a medial redshirt in 2009. As a senior at Barron High School (Wisconsin), Hallberg was a Third-Team All-State selection as he hit .556 with four home runs and no strikeouts. Upon arriving at OSU, Hallberg was able to play in four games and notched four RBIs before a shoullder injury side-lined him for the rest of the season. He also earned OSU Scholar-Athlete honors during his first year. In 2010, Hallberg batted .273 over 24 starts for the Buckeyes.
