Shawn Riggans comes to New Jersey after spending part of each of the past four seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays. In his major league career, the Florida native has posted a .202 average with seven home runs in 64 games.
Riggans, now in his 10th professional season, was drafted by Tampa Bay in the 24th round in 2000 out of Indian River (Fla.) Community College. He made his major league debut with the Rays in September 2006.
In 2008, Riggans made his first opening day roster after batting .316 in spring training for Tampa Bay and delivered his first hit of the season on April 4 at Yankee Stadium, a pinch-hit, bases-clearing double with the bases loaded. Four days later, he connected on his first career home run off Baltimore's Eric Bedard.
In his minor league career, Riggans owns a .289 average with 52 home runs.
