Coury spent the 2009 season in the Atlanta Braves’ minor-league system after being signed as a non-drafted free agent. Previously, he had played collegiate baseball at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Massasoit Community College and UMass. In 2009 at Northwestern Oklahoma, he hit .428 with 63 RBI, an .855 slugging percentage, and 18 home runs, fourth-highest all time in a single season at the school. The 23-year-old went to Durfee High School in Fall River, where he was named a Big Three Conference all-star his senior season. He also spent part of the 2009 season with the New Bedford Bay Sox of the New England Collegiate League.
