Smith is currently a junior outfielder for the University of North Florida Ospreys in his hometown of Jacksonville. As a freshman, Smith's season was highlighted with great defense which led to a team best 1.000 fielding percentage. Smith also led all Osprey freshmen in hits with 16 during the 2008 season. Last year Smith played in 50 games, hitting six home runs and a team-leading six triples. His ability to handle the bat was a difference maker as he only grounded into one double play in 199 at-bats while also leading the team with seven sacrifice bunts. In 2010, Smith hit .341 while driving in 47 runs over 52 games.
