Lomack, a native of Los Angeles, California, was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 14th round of the 2004 MLB Amateur Draft out of Prairie View A&M University. Lomack spent two seasons playing for the Buccos appearing in 130 games batting .262 to go along with 10 doubles, 1 triple, and swiping 60 bases in 76 attempts, with 434 official at-bats. During this time he split playing time between Williamsport and Hickory of the New York-Penn League and South Atlantic League, respectively. Lomack was signed by the Gary SouthShore RailCats from first ever multi-league independent pro baseball tryouts that resulted in twenty three players being signed and invited to spring training by 21 different teams, held by the Golden League and Northern League back in early April.
