McGill returned to Lincoln after spending March of 2009 in the Chicago Cubs’ spring camp, and went on to post an All-Star season. Shawn stole an eye-popping 22 bases, and drove in a career-best 48 runs. McGill was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 23rd round of the 2006 MLB draft. He spent two seasons in the Phillies organization, totaling just 27 games, but he had a memorable 2008 in Lincoln, leading the team in triples and on-base percentage while stealing 15 bases in 16 tries. At Boston College, he earned All-Big East second-team honors as a catcher in 2005, hitting .277 with 10 doubles and 29 RBIs, and throwing out 33 percent of would-be base stealers.
