Drafted in the second round by the Tampa Bay Rays (78th overall), infielder Kenny Diekroeger comes to Newport after declining to sign with the Rays to attend Stanford University. Kenny had an outstanding freshman season, finishing the regular season batting .351 in 208 at-bats. He hit 11 doubles, 5 homeruns and drove in 39 as he started 52 of the team’s 54 games. Diekroeger attended Menlo School in California where, following his senior season, he was named prep first-team All-American by Baseball America. He was named league MVP and earned all-state and all-county honors. His senior season he batted .586 with 10 doubles, 3 triples, 4 homeruns and 15 stolen bases. Born to Ken and Kathy, Kenny has two younger brothers, Kenny and Danny. Danny is a standout baseball player having already committed to Stanford for 2014. Kenny’s mother ran track and cross country at Dartmouth where she set multiple school records. Kenny is also teammates with Gulls pitcher Mark Appel at Stanford.
