Mahala joins his collegiate teammate and returning Oilmen infielder Cody Dykema on this year's roster. The Highland native had an excellent year at Heartland Community College, batting .298 with six home runs and 39 RBI, ranking in the top two in both categories on the team.
In addition, Mahala also had 11 doubles and led HCC in walks with 35 in 54 games played. Prior to his time at HCC, Mahala attended Ball State University, posting a .257 average in 35 games (30 starts) with five home runs and 23 RBI as a true freshman.
Mahala was a decorated high school player at Andrean, leading his team to back-to-back state titles in 2009 and 2010, as well as four straight sectional titles. He was named First Team All-State as a senior, batting .318 with 34 RBI and a 10-0 record on the mound. He also currently holds the Andrean career record for home runs and is second in career RBI and walks.
Mahala saw time last summer in the MCL for the Illinois Lincolns, batting .273 in 22 games with 22 RBI and nine doubles.
