In 2013, MacKenzie started 53 of the 54 games he appeared in for the Chippewas. He posted a .253 batting average, 47 hits, 29 runs, 17 RBI, and was second on the team in triples with three. In 2012, MacKenzie appeared in 50 games, starting 43 at second base. He led CMU with an on-base percentage of .464 and was second on the team in walks. He earned MAC West Player of the Week honors in a series against Akron when he batted .700 with two doubles, three runs and three walks. In High School, he earned Detroit Free Press Dream Team and first-team all state honors as a senior. He led Birmingham Brother Rice in runs, hits, doubles, triples, stolen bases, walks, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage as a junior and was runner-up for Gatorade Player of the Year.
