Wheeler recently completed his freshman season for Kansas after a decorated prep career at Thunderbird High School in Arizona. The power-hitting corner infielder was the top-ranked baseball recruit in the state of Arizona in 2011, according to ESPNHS. He was a three-time All-State selection by the Arizona Republic and honored twice by the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association for his accomplishments.
As a junior at Thunderbird High, Wheeler earned Black Canyon Region Player of the Year honors after batting .554 with 16 doubles, 10 home runs and 50 RBIs. He helped the Chiefs to a 27-4 overall record that year and a runner-up finish in the Arizona 4A Division II State Championship. Wheeler posted batting averages of .485 as a sophomore and .337 as a freshman, respectively. He is a native of Phoenix, Arizona.
