Smith will play his first season with Southern Maryland in 2013 after splitting time throughout independent baseball with the American Association’s with the Gary SouthShore RailCats, Wichita Wingnuts and Lincoln Saltdogs.
During his stints with each team, the outfielder compiled a combined .268 batting average in 60 games. Smith also chipped in 61 hits, 34 runs, 22 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. Through 13 seasons the The 33 year-old has appeared in 953 career games and has a .260 average through 3,942 lifetime at bats.
After signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 15th round of the 2000 MLB June Amateur Draft, Smith reached Double-A Birmingham with the Barons of the Southern League for one season (2007) as well as splitting his time across the Independent League.
