One of only two catchers currently on the SteepleCats’ roster heading into the season, Maryland freshman phenom Kevin Martir will bring his talents to the Berkshires for the 2013 campaign.
Martir did not need much time to adjust to the college game as a rookie and capped off a walk-off win with the game-winning hit for the Terps back in February. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native finished his first season in Maryland batting .279 in 50 appearances – 45 starts – as the team’s primary catcher. The rookie drilled nine doubles and drove in 19 runs while slugging .328 on the year.
In high school, Martir became the first player to win back-to-back championships in the PSAL and CHSAA. He was ranked No. 10 in New York and No. 480 nationally by Perfect Game USA at the conclusion of his high school career and was selected as a 2011 Perfect Game USA preseason All-America high honorable mention.
The son of Wilson Venn and Luisa Martir, Kevin has two brothers, Wilson and Juan Carlos, and two sisters, Stephanie and Amanda.
