Grant was a sophomore outfielder at the University of San Diego in 2012-13. A graduate of Claremont High School in Claremont, Calif., he hit .167 (1-6) with no homers or RBIs and played mainly as a late-game defensive replacement.
Grant played in nine games as a USD freshman in 2012, scored two runs, and was hitless in his only at-bat. He was a four-year starter at Claremont High, hit .300 or better every season, was the team MVP as a freshman and earned team Defensive Player of the Year honors as a junior and senior before signing with the Torrerros.
His older brother, Adam Melker, starred for the Knights in 2008 and 2009 while at Cal Poly. Adam now plays in the St. Louis Cardinals' minor-league system.
