Littleton, Colorado native Jake Opitz attended the University of Nebraska. Opitz excelled with the Cornhuskers, batting .296 with 21 homers and 139 RBI in four years of college, including being named to the First-Team All-Big 12 as the second baseman in 2008. The 6-0, 190 lbs infielder was originally drafted out of high school by the Seattle Mariners in the 39th round of the 2004 draft, but did not sign. He was drafted after college by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round of the 2008 draft. Opitz remained in the Cubs system, advancing up to double-AA Tennessee in 2010. In 2011, he spent 85 games in Daytona of the advanced single-A Florida State league before being released.
