Rodriguez was ranked as the No. 1 player in Hawaii and 174th nationally in 2011 by Perfect Game USA. He was all-state as a junior and senior at Iolani High in Hawaii, and was selected by Atlanta in the 20th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

He played for the San Luis Obispo Blues in the California Collegiate League last summer and was 2-0 with a 3.90 ERA in seven games, with 36 strikeouts in 30 innings. He was a third-team all-star and rated as the No. 9 pro prospect in the league by Perfect Game USA.
