Max missed the 2012 college season while recovering from cancer surgery. He was rated as the No. 1 Division III draft-eligible prospect by Baseball America magazine before the season. Max was a second-team WCL all-star and a West Division all-star. He was 6-1, 2.42 in nine starts, and started the Knights' playoff series opener at Bend and the Championship Series finale vs. Walla Walla. Max was an honorable-mention Northwest Conference All-Star in 2011. He was 5-4 with a 3.75 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 81.2 innings. Max was named the Northwest Conference's Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 15.
Max was 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA with the Knights in 2010. He was a First-Team All-League selection twice at Fort Vancouver High in Vancouver, Wash., before attending PLU.
