One of the Big East’s most efficient arms this past spring at Louisville, Amlung brings with him high hopes for success for himself and the Gatemen this summer.
To begin his sophomore campaign, Amlung went 7-0 with an eye-popping 1.42 ERA in his opening 10 starts for the Cardinals. He struck out 53 against 17 walks and 47 hits in 69.2 innings.
As a redshirt freshman last spring, Amlung made an immediate positive impact. He was 5-2 with a 4.27 ERA, while striking out 55 in 65.1 innings and 20 appearances (10 starts).
He made good use of his classroom time during his redshirt season when he could not play, earning Big East Academic All-Star honors.
At St. Xavier High School in Kentucky, Amlung was as good as it got. He was a First Team All-State, All-Region, and All-District honoree, going a combined 13-4 with 95 strikeouts and microscopic ERAs his junior (1.55) and senior (2.09) seasons.
With plans to be an architect when his baseball career comes to a close, Amlung has many varied interests off the diamond. He enjoys golf, video games, camping and kayaking. His favorite movie is Dumb and Dumber and his favorite television show is Man vs. Wild. His all-time favorite athlete is former Cincinnati Red shortstop Barry Larkin.
He says that his brother has had the greatest influence on his career and helped him develop the strong throwing arm he has today.
