As a senior at Point Loma Nazarene University, Steinhauer led the Sea Lions to a second place finish in the NAIA College World Series. Steinhauer had an amazing statistical season with a .379 average, blasting 19 home runs. He earned All-American Honorable mention for his fantastic senior season and was named to the NAIA CWS All-Tournament Team. He gained attention from the New York Mets organization as they drafted him in the 27th round of the 2009 Rule 4 draft. Steinhauer started hot in the Mets organization, batting .364 with 22 RBIs and five homeruns while playing only 24 games in rookie ball.
