The Sioux City Explorers (33-41)'s three first-inning runs built an early lead that helped bring home a 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (42-30) on Saturday at Lewis _ Clark Park.

Wally Backman reached base three times in the game for the Sioux City Explorers. He scored one run and had one RBI. He singled in the first and seventh innings.

The Sioux City Explorers relied on Alain Quijano to eat up innings en route to the win. Quijano pitched seven innings and allowed one earned run, eight hits and one walk while striking out three.

Dexter Carter ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his third loss of the year. He lasted just four innings, walked two, struck out four, and allowed three runs.
