Early lead not enough for the Gary SouthShore, drop 6-4 decision to the Newark

The Gary SouthShore (10-12) jumped out to an early lead, but were unable to hold on and lost 6-4 to the Newark on Saturday.

While the Gary SouthShore led until the eighth inning, the Newark worked their way back and took the lead on a two-run single by Courtney Billingslea.

Juan Martinez was solid at the plate for the Newark. Martinez went 3-5, drove in one and scored two runs. He homered in the first inning and singled in the sixth and ninth innings.

Stephen Hiscock was effective even in defeat, mowing down eight the Newark batters and allowing two runs.

Matt Lyons got the win for the Newark. He pitched one shutout inning. He struck out one, walked one and surrendered no hits.

Chris Allen (3-1) was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings, walked none, struck out one, and allowed four runs.
