Connor Schaefbauer was cold coming off the bench, but Schaefbauer warmed up quickly as Schaefbauer stroked a key pinch-hit single in the eight to lead the Brewster Whitecaps (8-15) to a 4-3 win over the Orleans Firebirds (11-12) on Friday at Eldredge Park.
With the Brewster Whitecaps trailing by two in the eighth inning, Schaefbauer came to the plate and singled, scoring Austin Bailey.
The Orleans Firebirds jumped out to an early lead, but they were unable to hang on. The Orleans Firebirds were up until the eighth inning, but the Brewster Whitecaps had other plans for the final outcome, taking the lead back on an error.
Scott Heineman did his best to jumpstart the offense for the Brewster Whitecaps, reaching base three times. He singled in the sixth and ninth innings.
Evan Rutter brought the heat against the Orleans Firebirds during his outing. Rutter held the Orleans Firebirds hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four.
Matt Troupe was charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just two-thirds of an inning, walked one, struck out one, and allowed one run.
