A superb effort by Ethan Gross carried the Wareham Gatemen (2-0) to a 20-7 win over the Falmouth Commodores (0-2) on Saturday at Arnie Allen Diamond.
Gross racked up six RBIs on four hits for the Wareham Gatemen. He doubled in the seventh inning, homered in the fifth and eighth innings, and singled in the ninth inning.
The Wareham Gatemen blew out the Falmouth Commodores thanks to 18 hits, including zero extra base hits. The Wareham Gatemen scored five runs in the fifth on a solo home run by Dustin DeMuth, a solo home run by Gross, , and a double by Daniel Palka.
The Falmouth Commodores' lineup had no answer for Nicholas Rumbelow. Rumbelow held the Falmouth Commodores hitless over one inning, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out three.
Alex Maldonado racked up two RBIs on three hits for the Falmouth Commodores. He doubled in the sixth inning and singled in the second and ninth innings.
Barrett Astin got his first win for the Wareham Gatemen despite allowing five runs over five innings. He struck out two, walked three and surrendered eight hits.
Sean Hagan (0-1) was the game's losing pitcher. He allowed eight runs in four innings, walked two and struck out four.
The Wareham Gatemen pounded the Falmouth Commodores pitching, as six hitters combined for 14 hits, 20 RBIs and 15 runs scored.
