Matthew Chavarria brought home the winning run to give the West Virginia Miners (1-0) the lead in the seventh inning, as the West Virginia Miners hung on to beat the Chillicothe Paints (0-1) 6-2 on Tuesday.

After John Sprik hit into a fielder's choice, Chavarria came to the plate with the West Virginia Miners trailing by one, and doubled, plating Sprik and Mark Benak.

Benak got on base three times in the game for the West Virginia Miners. He scored one run and had one RBI. He singled in the eighth inning.

The Chillicothe Paints couldn't get anything going as long as Joe Candelmo was on the mound. The Chillicothe Paints managed just two hits off of the the West Virginia Miners' pitcher, who allowed one earned run, walked two and struck out seven during his 3 2/3 innings of work.

Joe Zwierzynski was charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just two-thirds of an inning, walked none, struck out none, and allowed three runs.
