Brett Winger brought home the go-ahead run to give the Newport Gulls (3-1) the lead in the eighth inning, as the Newport Gulls hung on to beat the New Bedford Bay Sox (2-1) 3-2 on Monday.Conor Keniry to start the eighth. He then went from first to second on a groundout by John Norwood. Finally, Winger came to the plate with the Newport Gulls trailing by one, and reached on an error, scoring Keniry and Jeff Melillo.
Michael Johnson baffled the New Bedford Bay Sox, striking out 12 batters. Johnson allowed one earned run, three hits and one walk over 5 2/3 innings.
David Schmidt improved to 1-0 on the year by picking up the win for the Newport Gulls. Schmidt struck out two, walked none and gave up one hit.
Samuel Dodge ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just two innings, walked three, struck out one, and allowed three runs.
