The Keene Swamp Bats fend off the Vermont Mountaineers' late push, hold on 8-6

The Vermont Mountaineers (0-2) were never able to get over the hump and overcome their troubles against the Keene Swamp Bats (2-0) on Saturday, as the Vermont Mountaineers fell 8-6 at Montpelier Recreation Field after falling behind by six runs in the eighth inning.

The Vermont Mountaineers scored four runs in the ninth on an error, a two-run home run by Logan Pierce, and an RBI single by Michael White. Still, the Vermont Mountaineers couldn't catch the Keene Swamp Bats.

Frankie Schwindel had two extra-base hits for the Keene Swamp Bats. He doubled in the fourth and seventh innings.

The Keene Swamp Bats relied on Scott Simon to eat up innings en route to the win. Simon allowed two earned runs, three hits and one walk while striking out five over seven innings of work.

The Vermont Mountaineers were led by Rob Kelly's hitting. Kelly went 2-4, drove in one and scored two runs. He homered in the first inning and singled in the ninth inning.

Casey Delgado (0-1) took the loss for the Vermont Mountaineers. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings, walked one, struck out seven, and allowed five runs.

The Keene Swamp Bats were sparked by Fran Whitten and Dylan Moore, who teamed up for six hits and five RBIs.
